September 29, 2008 by Fernando Funicello
Due to the large number of questions and doubts about the vaccine and campaign against rubella, mainly related to pregnancy, seek a doctor gynecologist / obstetrician so that it can solve most of the questions found here.
We thank Dr. Francisco Alves Engelke, who is also the technical director of Alpha Home Care, which provides medical services to the home in Sao Paulo.
Come to exclarecimentos:
What is rubella?
Much has been said about the disease rubella: an infectious disease caused by a virus, highly contagious and high prevalence.
The main concern of rubella virus infection is when a woman contracts the virus during pregnancy. In these cases the virus is transmitted to the fetus causing the disease (which is called Congenital rubella syndrome in), which can result in serious problems, such as spontaneous abortion, congenital defects in children, cataract, glaucoma, deafness, mental retardation, and so on.
Why the campaigns of vaccination?
The vaccination campaigns, aimed at reducing the occurrence of these problems by encouraging the population to be vaccinated to prevent the epidemic of rubella that usually occur every 6-10 years in the winter and spring. The long-term goal is to eradicate this disease in the country as happened with the infant paralysis.
In Brazil, vaccination is compulsory from 1 year of age since 1997, administered, usually in combination with measles and mumps vaccine - triple vaccine.
The vaccine used is made from live attenuated strain of the virus RA 27 / 3.
The vaccine is effective in preventing disease?
Yes The rubella vaccine is effective in almost 100%.
Besides the children, the vaccine should be given to women who have not had the disease before becoming pregnant.
The vaccine should also be given to men?
Yes The campaign this year sought to achieve especially the male audience on the basis of epidemiological data from 2007 that showed that about 70% of confirmed cases of rubella occurred in men.
Why did the campaign emphasis on the age of 20 to 39 years?
Because this was the age range most affected by the disease in both sexes in the data of 2007 of more than 8000 cases reported. In 2008, the situation is repeating, as shown in the chart of the Ministry of Health
The vaccine can be given to pregnant women?
No, it is contraindicated for pregnant women.
It also recommends that women vaccinated not become pregnant within one month after the administration of the vaccine.
And if you discover that the woman was pregnant and who received the vaccine?
The contraindication to vaccination of pregnant women is based on a theoretical risk, since the vaccine is made from live attenuated virus. The risk of a problem occurs is less than 1%, so even this percentage is considered by limitations, not statistics based on data from occurrence of the disease.
There is no documented case of the occurrence of the disease over the last 30 years in children of women who were pregnant and who received the vaccine inadvertently.
So, if a patient is pregnant after discovering be vaccinated, there is no reason to take any hasty measure, but only inform the doctor should keep an expectant conduct.
Considering the information collected in campaigns made in Brazil and the experience of other countries such as USA, UK, Germany and so on., The possibility of congenital rubella happen to (the transmitted to the fetus by the mother) in crinças born to mothers who took inadvertently the vaccine is minimal, if not nil.
The woman who is breastfeeding may take the vaccine?
After childbirth, women can receive the vaccine at any time. There is no contraindication to breastfeeding if the woman took the vaccine or even if you have the disease rubella.
There are other contra-indications for vaccination against rubella?
Yes The vaccine is contraindicated for people who have had severe allergic reaction to the vaccine, the subjects with congenital or acquired immunodeficiency diseases (AIDS), with low immunity, under chemotherapy treatment and bone marrow transplant surgery which has been made for less than two years.
Others who took the vaccine can take alcoholic beverage?
In principle, there are no references to interactions between alcohol and the use of vaccine. But it would be better as a precaution not associate the two. In general, you should not combine with any beverage product.
We hope to have helped solve all the questions, or at least most found in the comments.
Special thanks to Alpha Home Care and to Dr. Engelke Francisco.
